Talking Therapies for Couples

What is couples therapy?

Our Derby and Derbyshire service offers specialist support for couples through evidence-based approaches such as Behavioural Couples Therapy (BCT) and Couples Counselling for Depression (CCfD).

Couples therapy provides a supportive space to explore relationship challenges with a trained therapist. Whether you’re facing ongoing tension, communication problems, or one partner is experiencing depression, this therapy can help you work through difficulties together.

What is Behavioural Couples Therapy (BCT)?

BCT focuses on helping partners recognise and change patterns of behaviour that may be harming the relationship. Based on cognitive-behavioural principles, this approach teaches practical tools for:

  • Improving communication
  • Resolving conflict
  • Strengthening connection and mutual understanding
  • Building healthier ways of interacting

The aim is to help couples build a more satisfying relationship while learning skills they can continue using beyond therapy.

What is Couples Counselling for Depression (CCfD)?

CCfD is specifically designed for couples where one or both partners are affected by depression. Depression can place significant strain on relationships, and this therapy helps couples:

  • Understand how depression is influencing the relationship
  • Develop supportive strategies together
  • Improve emotional closeness and mutual empathy
  • Learn techniques to manage symptoms and maintain wellbeing

The goal is to help both partners feel heard, supported, and more confident in navigating the challenges that depression brings.

How is couples therapy delivered?

Sessions are led by a trained therapist and typically take place either face-to-face or via secure video call. Each session provides a neutral and confidential space to explore the difficulties you’re facing.

You’ll be encouraged to reflect on current and past relationship dynamics, identify shared goals, and build better communication skills.

Couples therapy can be especially helpful for those:

  • Experiencing communication breakdowns
  • Facing trust or intimacy issues
  • Navigating major life transitions
  • Coping with the emotional impact of depression
