Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

What is Interpersonal Therapy?
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is a structured, short-term form of talking therapy that focuses on the connection between how we feel and how we relate to others. It’s designed to help you understand how your relationships—past and present—might be contributing to feelings of low mood or depression.
Rather than looking deeply into childhood experiences, IPT concentrates on current relationships with family, friends, partners, or colleagues and how they might be impacting your emotional wellbeing.
What issues can IPT support with?
- Depression and persistent low mood
- Struggles with grief or loss
- Relationship difficulties or breakdowns
- Life transitions that affect relationships (e.g. parenthood, retirement, separation)
What are the benefits of IPT?
IPT can help you:
- Gain insight into how relationship patterns affect your emotions
- Improve communication and conflict resolution skills
- Navigate life changes or losses more confidently
- Strengthen your ability to build and maintain healthy, supportive relationships
- Reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety linked to interpersonal stress
While results can vary from person to person, many people find IPT helps them feel more connected, less isolated, and better equipped to manage relationship challenges.
How is IPT delivered?
In Derby and Derbyshire, Interpersonal Therapy is delivered over a set number of sessions with a qualified therapist. Sessions can take place in-person, over the phone, or via secure video calls—depending on your preference and needs.
Together, you and your therapist will explore key relationship patterns and how they influence your feelings and behaviours. You’ll also work on developing practical strategies for managing emotions and improving communication in everyday life.
