Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

CBT is a structured form of talking therapy that helps you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are connected. It teaches you how to recognise unhelpful thinking patterns and replace them with more constructive ones to improve your mental wellbeing.

CBT is proven to be effective for a range of mental and emotional health issues, including:

  • Anxiety and excessive worry
  • Depression and low mood
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Eating disorders
  • Chronic pain and other long-term health issues

What to expect from CBT sessions

CBT can be delivered in different ways to suit your needs and preferences. In Derby and Derbyshire, we offer:

  • Guided self-help
Work through structured resources at your own pace with regular support from a therapist.
  • One-to-one CBT
Work directly with a therapist to explore your thoughts, practice new skills, and track your progress.
  • CBT webinars
These live online sessions share practical coping strategies. You can attend anonymously and ask questions via chat—no need to share personal experiences.
  • Digital CBT with SilverCloud
A flexible online programme available 24/7, supported by periodic check-ins with a trained therapist.

CBT is available in-person, by phone, via video, or entirely online.

Why choose CBT?

CBT offers practical tools that you can continue to use long after your sessions end. Many people notice a positive change in a relatively short amount of time compared to other types of therapy.

In some cases, CBT is as effective as medication—and can be especially useful when medication alone hasn’t provided enough relief.

While it may not suit everyone, many people find CBT empowers them to take control of their thoughts and behaviours, improving their day-to-day life.
