Struggling with Stress?

You don’t have to cope alone.

Understanding Stress

Stress is something most of us experience – it’s a natural reaction when life feels demanding, uncertain, or overwhelming. Whether it’s pressure at work, money worries, health concerns, or challenges in your personal life, stress can take a real toll on how you feel day to day.

When you’re stressed, your body goes into “alert mode,” releasing hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. This is your fight-or-flight response, which helps you react to short-term challenges. But if stress builds up over time, it can begin to affect your mental and physical wellbeing.

Signs of stress may include:

  • Feeling anxious, tense, or irritable
  • Struggling to sleep or feeling constantly tired
  • Headaches, stomach issues, or muscle tension
  • Difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, or poor decision-making
  • Mood swings or withdrawing from people
  • Turning to food, alcohol, or other habits to cope

Everyone’s stress triggers are different, but you don’t have to manage them alone. Recognising stress early gives you the chance to take action before it starts to feel unmanageable.

How to manage stress

Simple steps can make a big difference. Try deep breathing, mindfulness, or physical activity to release built-up tension. Talking to someone – whether it’s a friend, family member, or therapist – can help you process what you’re going through.

If stress is starting to affect your health or your ability to cope, our NHS talking therapies service in Derby and Derbyshire can support you. We’re here to help you feel more in control and build resilience for the future.
