Derby and Derbyshire Talking Therapies is a confidential, NHS-funded service offering free support for common mental health challenges like low mood, stress, and anxiety. If you’re aged 16 or over and registered with a local GP, you can self-refer without needing to see your doctor.

Our process

  1. Referral

    You can self-refer directly or be referred by your GP or another healthcare professional.

  2. Consultation

    Once we receive your referral, we’ll arrange a friendly, confidential assessment to understand how best we can support you.

  3. Therapy

    Following assessment, we’ll recommend the most appropriate therapy option, delivered by a qualified mental health professional.

What are NHS Talking Therapies?

Is this a free service?

Yes, our service is free to use and fully funded by the NHS.

Am I eligible for the service?

You can access Derby and Derbyshire Talking Therapies if you’re aged 16 or over and registered with a GP in Derby or Derbyshire. Once you refer yourself, we’ll arrange an initial assessment to understand how we can best support you.

How long will I wait to start therapy?

Waiting times vary depending on the therapy type, but our NHS targets are:

  • 75% of people start therapy within 6 weeks of referral
  • 95% start therapy within 18 weeks

What if I need urgent help?

We’re not a crisis service. If you need immediate support, please visit our Urgent Help page for emergency contact details and services that can assist you right away.

Self-referrals

If you’re aged 16 or over and registered with a local GP, you can self-refer by using our digital assistant pop-up, you will be guided through some questions which will take approximately 6 minutes.

This is the fastest way to access support.

Our phone lines are open Monday to Thursday 8am – 7:45pm and Friday 8am – 4:30pm.

Supported Online Therapy Programme

If you’re looking for free therapy online, our supported mental health programmes are completely free to use, and you can sign up while you are on the waiting list for in-person therapy.
